Runway Rubbish/ Recycled Fashion Show 2013

On the evening of the 5th of February, I had the pleasure of attending OSU's annual Recycled Fashion Show. There is quite a plethora of fashion shows at Oregon State; the Red Dress Show, the Recycled Fashion Show, Mom's Weekend Fashion Show, the Spring Fashion Show, and usually a few more non-annual events. My two favorite shows to attend are the Recycled Fashion Show and the Spring Fashion Show!

Because this year marks the 27th or 28th annual Recycled Show, I was very surprised when I saw that this year's event was free (The last two years have been $5 admission, and still managed a jammed-pack audience). I made sure that my sister and I made it to the MU Ballroom no later than when the doors opened at 6pm, and I was again surprised by the lack of a long line, or people rushing ahead to go reserve good seats. My sister and I sat about the third row from the runway and probably could have reserved a couple rows for ourselves if we wanted.

Still confused, I opened the program and the confusion was immediately cleared up. Only 30 designers in the show. 30 might seem like a large number, but with each designer typically creating one look each it doesn't equate to a very long show. Not to mention that past years have been double that number of designers.

Despite the few designers in the show, OSU's Fashion Organization still put on a great event. The audience still filled the ballroom, just no one had to stand to watch the whole show this year. Before runway part of the show began, I got to learn some new facts about what can and cannot be recycled. Like coffee cups, who knew that they belong in the trash? Apparently cardboard coated with plastic cannot be recycled in any way.

The thirty designers put on a great show! I only knew a few of the designers in the show and they proved to be as awesome as I already knew they were! Plus, there were some great new designers that demanded my attention. And not to be cynical, but there were also plenty of plain, non-creative looks make out of newspaper or bubble wrap. I don't think it would be the Recycled Fashion Show without those looks though, because this is one of the shows that student designers do not need to be an apparel design major to participate.

Now onto the designs! To start out the show was Brigitte Cluver's design (the professor who taught me all about testing textiles!) on her lovely little diva of a daughter, Mackenzie Cluver! She rocked her walk down the runway in an outfit made of old, out-grown clothes and had some fancy poses at the end of the walk!

**Note: It was sometimes difficult to hear what the MC's were saying about what the garment was made of, because of the influx of the music. I was glad to have MC's back though, it makes it much easier to spend all of my time looking at the designs rather than split my time between trying to read on the screen what the design was made of and analyzing the design.

Some other notable designs were Tayler Worrell's design, in her very classic style in this strapless dress made of receipts. Modeled by the lovely Jessica Neffendorf.

Lauren Graebner grabbed everyone's attention with her adorable children's looks! First a cute little girl in a design made from an old pinata, high school graduation gown, and race numbers. She had a second look, equally adorable, for a little boy who even showed us his muscles at the end of the runway! Lauren's designs won the "Chair's Choice Award," the new Associate Dean loved these looks!

Next came the beautiful Christina Ngo, modeling her own edgy/elegant look (and fantastic pink hair!). She used caution tape, an old choir dress, and leftover ribbons and chain. I really enjoyed this look because it was one of the first women's looks in the show that had a different silhouette and wasn't made of paper.

Dina Pham and Jennifer Troung probably had my favorite "paper" dresses. They were both cute and classy, but still had some pizazz to make the look not like everyone else's. Jennifer Troung's look won the award for "Best in Show."

Ish Guevara is a new designer (to me anyway) who definitely got my attention. I really loved the fact that he had three looks that went together and didn't resemble the rubbish they were made of (so much so that I can't remember what they were made of!).  I especially liked the "armor" dress, and loooved the cape made of straws. The theatrics that went with the looks on the runway were fun, but not necessary in my opinion. This collection said enough for itself, especially with the eccentric styling. I'll be excited to see how this designer develops as he goes through the program.

One dazzaling design that earned itself an award, was Elisse Hansen's dress made of a mattress cover (or maybe an old air mattress) and pieces of mirror. It was a very neat affect as it went down the runway and the dress reflected little lights on the ceiling. She won the "Most Creative Use of Materials."

The last look of the show was graduate student Keith Nishida's design, modeled by the fabulous Jamie Cheung. The dress has an interesting shape, and is made of pop can tabs! I really like how the "fabric" looks like chain mail! (And I love the tiara!) Keith's look won "Most Innovative Design." I really enjoyed this design and was excited to see the difference in Keith's designs from last year's to this year's (both years were great by the way). It was an excellent look to end the show on!

Overall, it was a great show and I was happy that I could attend! I got in some reading while I waited for the show to start (I was so thankful I brought a book!) and was happy to catch up with some people I hadn't seen for a while. Great work designers! Good luck on your next show!! (I will have to post more photos when they become available! Enjoy these few that I stole!)

Recycled Fashions for 2011

Hmm... two posts in January, two posts in February? Perhaps I've been busy? Well, this last Thursday was the 21st annual OSU Recycled Fashion Show: Dumpster to Diamonds. I created two garments for the show, because I'm crazy and seem to love being busy.

The first garment I thought of last year: The Yin Yang Dress, made of black and white karate uniforms. My lovely model Christina did a fantastic job, made for an exciting part in the show with a fan snap!

My other creation came from trying to figure out what to do with the plastic bags my curtains came in. Then I remembered how many of these zippered bags my mom has, I told another lady about it who has lots of them, and so before I knew it I had lots of plastic zipper bags to make a dress with!

My beautiful sister Kambria modeled this dress in her best runway walk yet!

I was also really happy to have Heidi to do hair for my models, both of my amazing models did their own make up. I think I see a future of styling for Heidi in the future.... :)

It was a really great show, and if you would like to watch it, go see it on KBVR!

Some special things to note, were some of the awards my friends won:

Ashley Bates: Most Innovative Design This dress was made of her old school bag and a suitcase!

Megan Amadon: Creative Use of Material As you can see, her dress is made of footballs and turf!

No awards for me this year, but I'm very proud of my designs!

New Year Blog ideas....

Since I've started writing on this blog so much, it has got me to thinking about why I write. For my small audience, I have heard that some enjoy hearing about what's going on in my life because they don't get to see me all the time, and hopefully for others they get some random bits of information that they might not have otherwise heard about.

On my side of things, writing is very therapeutic. I am fairly consistent at keeping a journal, it's nice to rant to the empty pages than to a friend or family member, while remaining sane. For this blog, I have found it to be therapeutic in a different way. When I am consistently writing, I think a lot about things I might want to post a blog about. Sometimes that can be annoying, but right now I'm trying to re-wire my mind to stop thinking about some stupid guy and think about things that matter to me. I am happy to report that this blog helps with that!

So now onto my real reason for this post! One of the blog's I read now, Chic Steals, recently did a 30 day outfit challenge. At first I thought she was just posting her outfits, which is cool, but not something I would ever want to do. After reading her post summarizing the 30 Day Challenge, I learned that each day she was incorporating something DIY and pulling out stuff from the back of her closet. I was really impressed with this idea!

Now it has me thinking. I have lots of clothing and accessories that I do not wear very often, perhaps a challenge would be fun! I have a couple ideas for a challenge for the month of January, please read through the ideas and vote on which one you think I should do :)

Accessories Challenge: I have lots of hats, scarves and jewelry that I seldom wear. My idea for this one is to pick one of the above mentioned items (hat, scarf or jewelry) and be sure to incorporate a different one every day for the month of January. For hats, I have so many! And a lot of different styles, so it would not become a post featuring all my different baseball caps :)
For scarves, I also have many. I think this idea would challenge me in discovering new ways to wear scarves because I wouldn't want to go to school wearing it the same way every single day.
And then there is jewelry. This would probably be the least challenging of the accessories, but my plan would be to pick out whatever jewelry I have to wear that day and design my outfit around it. Could be interesting.

Clubwear to Everyday wear Challenge: This challenge is simply taking any of my clubwear clothing and finding a way to wear it as everyday clothing. I have this problem where I like to buy fun and flashy clothes to go out in, but then my everyday wardrobe is lacking. I think this one would be fun, and I promise I won't come to school looking like a hooker, Madonna, star trek whore, or anything else I have been accused of while out!

Alright readers! Let me know what you think I should do! Please vote on the poll to the right!!

My Christmas List

Isn't it interesting that it get to be the holiday season, the time when we are supposed to be thankful for the family and friends we have, that it is still all about us? I mean, there is really no getting away from it in American Culture. I notice it even more after studying retail strategies for my final tomorrow....

Another reason I can't help but to think about me, is my parents requested a Christmas list that I can email them. They want to stay in and do all of their Christmas shopping online. I have to say, it's been pretty fun taking a break and seeing what sort of things I want online.

But really, if my family all went together and bought me a MacBook Pro, with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, I would be one happy camper. Probably more than just a happy camper.

But here are some fun things I found while online window shopping :)
From Onitsuka Tiger (Asics):

From Tokidoki & Asics:

From Nike:

And then of course, an endless list of music available on YesAsia! I guess an iTunes gift card would work too :)

Now to back to figuring out what to get everyone else!

Red Dress Fashion Show

The 2nd Annual World AIDS Day Red Dress Fashion Show took place November 30th. There were lots of designers and lots of amazing designs! It was a lot of fun to see how amazing my designer friends are!

One of my favorite dresses of the show was Ashley Bate's dress:

I've heard comments from people that they want this dress as their wedding dress in white or ivory. It's absolutely stunning, and you can really see all the time and effort she put into it.

My dress turned out pretty well, but my original design had more to it and I just ran out of time. My sister Kambria was wonderful enough to model for me again this year. She did a good job! (She did her hair and make up, AMAZING!)

And here is a photo of Ashley, Missy, and I and our beautiful dresses! I love fashion shows!

More links!

I know I just updated my list of blogs and links (and will probably continue to do so as I keep learning of new cool things) but I had completely overlooked adding this particular store to my link list!

One of my friends, Heidi, has a new Etsy store up! It's called Heroma's Hands. She has a hobby of knitting, and has decided to put her hobby to work for her! Even though I have a strong policy against modeling (because I am a designer!), I decided to help out my friend and model her scarves and other knits. The photos turned out great, and you should definitely take a look at her store!

Here are a couple of items, with yours truly as the model:

This is the scarf that is reserved for me! It's unique because its knitted lengthwise instead of widthwise! Probably the bad part of modeling...

Go check out her store!!!

People, blogs, and links!

It's about time I update my blog a little bit. First, I would like to introduce some awesome people who's blogs I've been reading and I think you should definitely take a peek at. The first blog is Chic Steals, which is written by Carly J. Cais. I had the pleasure of meeting her at Portland Fashion Week back in October. She is full of really great fashion information, and I'm happy to have a different perspective for viewing designers.

The reason I got to meet this lady was all because of my friend Amanda, who writes Grishley's. Both her and Nicole (author of Cut & Sew) are talented young women I get to take classes with. Go take a look at their blogs too!

The main reason I am updating my links and blogs, is because a disc golf store called discgolfstation.com contacted me about posting a link about them in my blog if they gave me a disc. I was first of all, very excited and a bit surprised that they found me through my blog! They are sending me a lightweight Buzzz, and I'll be sure to post again when I actually get it!

The last new link I want to mention is a link to an online store called Yes Asia! It is so amazing! I have had a really difficult time finding some of the Japanese artists I've become addicted to over Youtube on the internet. This website not only has all of these awesome music artists, but they also have DVDs of the Taiwanese drama "Basketball" (or Bullfighting) that I watched over the summer. (Be careful to start watching, it is very addicting and not all of the episodes are available on youtube!) Maybe I can start making a list on here of what I want for Christmas/ Birthday! :D

More Disc Art

Last night I stayed up waaay too late, but I had the opportunity to delve into yet another type of artwork: the art of dyeing discs. Being in the disc golf world I know quite a few people who dye their own discs. Some people are really talented and do some amazing work that they sell, and some people like to just make their discs look different than everyone else's.

Widye.com is a company that custom dyes discs, and has donated some great dyed discs to my disc golf event (Hope Open) for the past two years. This is one of my favorites:

There was also someone who dyed me an amazing disc with the M*A*S*H* cast on it, and a neat red cross in the back. I'll need to take a picture with something other than my phone before I post it.

Here is my first dye-job from last night (You can see how messy my desk really is...):

It was a pretty easy process, especially since my friends had everything and did all the necessary research. First thing we did was take off the hot-press stamp of the logo with acetone, which is really easy if you let your disc set in the acetone for a couple minutes (just not too long, acetone will eat the disc!). The next thing was to decided what color of dye to use, then put it in a pan and heat it up on the stove. It only needs to get as warm so you can still touch it, so definitely not boiling. As the dye was heating up, I came up with my design and cut it out on some contact paper (one side is sticky- you stick it to your disc, my friends got it pretty cheap at Home Depot). After sticking the contact paper on my disc where I did not want the dye to hit, I put the disc face down into the pan so it was floating on top. Then all you do is wait for 10 - 15 minutes, and see how it looks! I think I waited a little longer and added in more dye so it was dark enough. Then I rinsed it off with warm water in the sink, took of the contact paper, and wah la! I have a pretty disc!

I'm excited to try this again in the future, when I can put some more time into thinking of cool designs and play with more than one color. Definitely different than submitting designs to a company to get hot stamped on a disc!

November

I find it so odd that everyone gets into the writing mood in November. November is the month for writing Novels, and apparently for posting a blog everyday. I had no idea. Well, that's not completely true. A couple years ago, I did create an account for NaNoWriMo, but that's about as far as I got.

Today I am in the mood to write, but all of those could-be blogs that are floating around in my head require a little research, or uploading pictures, or other terribly difficult tasks like that. So instead I start reading what my friends are writing about. Everyone has so many interesting things going on in their life, it's great to hear about it.

In my life, I am currently swamped at school with one of the busiest terms of college I have ever had. This was unexpected, and I am hoping that my next couple of terms will be as easy as I am planning on them being. I have also been thinking a lot about the future. One of those things in my immediate future are deciding on what internships to apply for and where I want to spend my Fall 2011 term. I'm kind of thinking about Tokyo, but that will require a little more looking into.

So this has been my random blog post for the month, maybe November will prove to be an inspiring month of writing. It's already included some great reading, here is a link to a great post I read about Construction Worker uniforms in Japan. Very cool.

Happy reading & blogging my friends!

Of Games and People

I am a little behind on writing about some great events in my life that are worth writing about, but I will try to post them in chronological order and maybe throw in a rant or review in the middle :)

This event happened the Sunday after Thanksgiving in the form of the Turkey Triples Tournament. I had the opportunity to play in a triples disc golf tournament. If you are unfamiliar with idea of triples, it is basically three players using their throws for one group score. There are variations on how you can attain your score. In this tournament, the first round was "three-headed monster," in which each team member must contribute 6 of the total 18 drives, and for the holes that a team member contributes their drive, their other two teammates continue to play out the hole.

The second round was played as "best shot" which is exactly how it sounds. All of the team mates get to throw something for every shot, and the team picks which one they like best to get an overall best score.

As fun as this event sounds, (and as hard as I tried) there ended up being only one women's team at the event. (Actually, there ended up being a total of six women at the tournament, the other three were all part of different men's teams). My team consisted of Amber Cochran, Jackie Heider and me. We called ourselves Team Girl Squad and we competed with the Advanced Men. (Sadly, I was the only teammate who could appreciate Strongbad's cartoon!)

Our first round we set our goal to playing the coarse at par (54 total strokes, par=3 at each hole). We played most of the course at 2 over, but saved some of the difficult holes for the end where our focus and energy also dwindled, and ended up with a score of +6.

After getting some food and getting warmed up on that foggy day, we came back to play the best shot round at 2 under par! I can lay claim to 2 of the birdies (Birdie is one under par for the hole, so a 2) and the other 2 birdies I contributed a decent putt and a good drive.

The day proved to be very exciting for me, it was the first time I had ever birdied hole 15, and I hadn't played a round of disc golf since the event I ran on Halloween. More than just having fun at the event, I learned some things too. I feel like I have a very strong mindset, and have a lot of self-confidence in general. During those two rounds of disc golf, I learned that I have limited myself with how well I can play that disc golf course at Willamette Park. In my head, I really didn't think my team could play better than par. What helped me see these limitations I had put on myself, was playing with Amber. She is an up and coming disc golfer, and has a generally positive attitude towards disc golf. She helped me remember the attitude that I used to have playing that course, that one day I really could play every hole there really well. Why not? It's not like my drives haven't been getting farther and my putting range hasn't been getting longer. If I got nothing else from that tournament, it was well worth it.

Alas, that was not all I learned that day. For a long time I had been struggling with one certain relationship that seems to follow me like a shadow. Just before this event, some changes were made and I was still unsure that my decision was the right one. Now I know it was. At this event I got to see the many friends I have made over the years through disc golf. There are so many people that I know, and people that actually are happy to see me and what to know all that I have been up to since we last spoke. I have come to realize that it is really nice to be around people who want to see you. It's probably close to whether anyone reads your blog. I mean, take a look at this one, super long, should I read it? Well, I genuinely want to know what is going on in her life and what insight she can bring into mine, why not? Thanks for caring and I apologize for the length!
